Urology General Information

The UMMC urology residency program is an ACGME-accredited five-year program. Two residents are selected each year.

Appointments for PGY-1 urology training are finalized with the SAU at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The first year urology resident will rotate for a total of six months with adult urology and a total of six months with general surgery (rotations include SICU, pediatric surgery, trauma surgery, colorectal surgery, acute care surgery and transplant surgery).

The urology residency (PGY 2-5) is structured to provide a one-on-one mentorship for residents with urology faculty.  This will increase the support of each resident and faculty involvement in patient care and resident learning/teaching experiences.  This will lead to increased mentorship and real-time feedback for each urology resident. 

Residency assignments include four distinct rotations:

• UMMC hospitals and clinics - Adult service
• UMMC hospitals and clinics - Pediatric service
• G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center (located adjacent to UMMC)
• Mississippi Baptist Medical Center - Female Urology

Urologic house officers are responsible for all elements of patient care at UMMC and VA hospitals. Residents are the primary surgeons for all operative procedures, and, overall, each resident performs over 2,000 operations in adults and 200 operations in children during the four years. Continuity of patient care is assured by participation in outpatient clinics at Jackson Medical Mall and VA Hospital.

UMMC is the only academic medical center in the state and, thus, attracts a large patient volume with a variety of pathology. The Division of Urology is an active participant in the Southwest Oncology Group and there is abundant oncologic surgery. The residents have a large exposure to pediatric urology and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy at the University Medical Center.

The urology faculty is devoted to teaching and scholarly activity. In addition to informal instruction on rounds and direction in the conduct of research projects, there are two hours of planned conferences each week, a monthly Journal Club and periodic visiting professorships.

Christopher M. Bean, MD, is the program director of the Urology residency training program and Paula Domino, MD, is the associate program director for the program. The Urology faculty at UMMC is committed to fully preparing our residents for the ever-changing practice of urology and to provide a sound base for fellowship training, academic training or private practice.
